Optimization of Substation with IEC 61869 Merging Unit Technology

The traditional approach to implementing protection and control systems in utility substations incurs significant costs, particularly during commissioning. This paper explores the adoption of IEC-61869 in substations to tackle these challenges. The advantages include reduced commissioning time, cost savings in cable usage and civil design, and enhanced reliability via monitoring systems. This paper aims to discuss the implementation of IEC-61869 technology in utility substations to consolidate field measurements and transmit them to a centralized protection relay. Such an approach can led to more efficient and streamlined protection systems, potentially reducing the complexity and costs associated with traditional methods.
