Mapping local mixing times in stirred-tank reactors

Hamburg University of Technology and Boehringer Ingleheim used Simcenter M-Star to simulate mixing in a 3 L stirred-tank reactor and validate a new experimental method for measuring the spatial distribution of local mixing times. Rather than relying on a single global mixing-time measurement, the approach captures the spatial and temporal history of mixing and identifies poorly mixed regions and distinct flow structures. The simulated mixing-time distribution showed good agreement with experimental results, demonstrating how Simcenter M-Star can provide detailed, spatially resolved insight into mixing behavior and support experimental validation.
