Validating lattice boltzmann LES for biopharma equipment

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma and Hamburg University of Technology use M-Star to perform transient Lattice Boltzmann large-eddy simulations of a 3 L stirred-tank bioreactor and validate the approach against experimental measurements. The study compared simulated flow characteristics with novel 4D particle-tracking velocimetry data, including local velocities, turbulent kinetic energy, and energy dissipation. The validated simulations were then used to characterize flow patterns and mixing behavior within the bioreactor, demonstrating the potential of M-Star's LB-LES approach for detailed equipment characterization in biopharmaceutical processes.
