Validated CFD-DEM modeling of microcarrier bioreactors

Delft University of Technology utilized Simcenter M-Star to develop and validate a coupled CFD-DEM model of a 250 mL stirred-tank bioreactor for shear-sensitive stem cell cultures grown on microcarriers. The simulations predicted key engineering parameters—including power input, mixing time, kLa, and microcarrier suspension speed—with results within 20% of experimental and literature data across a range of operating conditions. The validated model was then used to evaluate operating conditions and hydrodynamic stresses, providing a basis for bioreactor process development and scale-up.
