Validating lattice Boltzmann LES for stirred-tank hydrodynamics

Illustration - Batch production - material preparation

BASF and Clausthal University of Technology utilized Simcenter M-Star to evaluate and validate Lattice Boltzmann large-eddy simulations of stirred-tank hydrodynamics. Simulations of Rushton and pitched-blade turbines were compared with experimental data for power input, local velocities, turbulent dissipation, and trailing-vortex behavior, with good agreement across the evaluated hydrodynamic characteristics. Mixing times were also compared with published experimental data, while the study identified limitations for systems with very large viscosity differences. In addition to fast simulation times, the authors emphasized the ease of use of M-Star, noting that its ease of use enables quick and reliable design calculations. The work provides a broad validation of Simcenter M-Star for fundamental stirred-tank flow and mixing applications.
