How Siemens EDA and AWS collaborated to make Solido Simulation Suite cloud-ready

Driven by the explosion of AI and expanding applications, chip design complexity is increasing exponentially. Applications such as high-performance computing (HPC), the Internet of Things (IoT), automotive, and 5G mobile communications, coupled with advanced process technology nodes require running extensive circuit simulations to ensure circuits function correctly. This increased demand, however, leads to extended simulation run times and a significant strain on traditional on-premises compute resources.

In collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Siemens EDA has made Solido Simulation Suite, an integrated suite of AI-accelerated simulators, cloud-ready, empowering faster design innovation to meet critical time-to-market requirements.

Growing design complexity

Today’s circuit simulation workflow is compute-intensive, often requiring run time of days to weeks, making it one of the most critical bottlenecks in the design intellectual property (IP) development cycle. For each circuit block IP, there are numerous iterations throughout the design cycle spanning the entire IP design and verification cycle, including design scoping, development and debugging. Each chip can consist of 10-20 circuit IP cores, and companies’ on-premises compute resources (data centers) and competing design projects pose significant challenges for designers. They are often unable to complete simulations in a timely fashion, leading to difficult trade-offs such as adding design margins and/or adjusting design schedules.

The cloud computing solution

Cloud computing has proven to reduce circuit simulation run times by providing design teams with scalable, on-demand compute resources. Siemens EDA’s Solido Custom IC team and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have collaborated to provide scalable, secure, and cost-effective circuit simulation workflows across multiple products within the Solido Simulation Suite. This collaboration addresses the fundamental challenge of compute resource bottlenecks while enabling design teams to leverage the elastic nature of cloud computing to meet their simulation demands efficiently.
