Characterizing turbulence near the bottom of stirred vessels

Illustration of man working on stirred vessel

The University of Limerick uses Simcenter M-Star to perform large-eddy simulations of turbulence near the bottom of a stirred vessel, with particular emphasis on the turbulent time and length scales relevant to solid-particle suspension. Simulations were performed across different spatial resolutions, vessel scales, and turbulence-model parameters, and the resulting velocity fluctuations, energy spectra, and integral and Taylor time scales were analyzed. The study provides a mechanistic understanding of the turbulent structures present near the vessel bottom where particles can accumulate before suspension.
