Carbon Footprint Indicator for Transportation

Your certified Carbon Footprint as a (Web) Service

Six-lane road that leads through a modern city with many green spaces.

The transport industry is a major contributor to global carbon emissions, comprising about 16% of total worldwide carbon emissions. Increased environmental regulations, rising costs associated with carbon emissions, and growing significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria for investors have created a demand for accurate transport CO2 emissions calculations. Siemens Digital Logistics has developed the "Carbon Footprint Indicator" web service to help users estimate CO2 equivalents (CO2e) for their transports.

This service is valuable for planning and evaluating transports when specific information like transport legs, fuel and vehicle types, and vehicle utilization is lacking. It requires sender and recipient locations, the main transport mode, and transport weight. The system generates a routing proposal based on standard transportation practices, including segmenting the transport into various legs, identifying transshipment points for mode switches, distance calculations based on transport mode, and CO2 equivalent calculations following global standards. The web service is accredited by Smart Freight Centre for being conform with the GLEC methodology as well as ISO 14083, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the calculations.
