An illuminated offshore oil and gas drilling rig stands prominently in the ocean at dusk, with support vessels nearby and other rigs visible in the distance.

For centuries, water has been used to fight fires. In 1806, the first patent was filed in London describing a perforated pipe concept for a fire protection system.

This was followed in 1860 by the first sprinkler patent. Later, more advanced sprinkler heads were developed, including bulbs. The common feature of this development was the use of water as a firefighting medium for cooling the fire.
