Effective return loss, a new metric for SerDes channel or package characterization

Effective Return Loss (ERL) is replacing the traditional frequency-domain Return Loss (RL) metric as a more effective means of characterizing SerDes channels. This paper describes why ERL is being introduced and adopted and how ERL is computed. HyperLynx support for ERL is also shown.

What is effective return loss?

ERL is defined as “a figure of merit for the electromagnetic wave reflection from a device or a channel input or output.” This document explains why this metric is being introduced and adopted and how ERL is computed. It also explains how HyperLynx® uses effective return loss, in addition to the traditional return loss (RL) and associated limit, for 50GBASE-KR and 50GBASE-CR channel characterization and compliance.
