Simulation driven antenna design to meet environmental specifications

An airplane in the sky.

Antenna design for aerospace is a high-stakes balancing act. Engineers must optimize electromagnetic performance including bandwidth, return loss and gain while also certifying that the antenna survives the brutal physical realities of flight: vibration, mechanical shock and extreme temperatures ranging from -54°C to +55°C. These are hard requirements defined by standards such as MIL-STD-810, not optional checkboxes.

Traditionally, meeting these requirements meant building physical prototypes, submitting them to environmental test facilities, discovering failures and iterating repeatedly. This process is expensive and time-consuming, pushing critical design decisions to the end of the development cycle where changes cost the most.

Design antennas right before you ever build one

Siemens Simcenter™ software offers a simulation-driven, multiphysics workflow that addresses both electromagnetic and structural-thermal performance within a single connected design process. Using Simcenter Feko™ for electromagnetic simulation, Simcenter Hypermesh™ for finite element modeling and Simcenter Optistruct™ for structural and thermal analysis, engineers can evaluate and optimize antenna designs early in development and at any stage thereafter. As demonstrated in this white paper using a blade antenna, this approach supported compliance with environmental specifications while reducing the need for physical testing and design rework.
