Building aftermarket value for battery energy storage systems

How a connected service lifecycle management foundation enables growth and customer satisfaction.

A battery energy storage system with several units overlooked by hills with renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines

The battery energy storage system (BESS) market is expanding rapidly, with a projected 5x annual growth rate from 2023 to 2030. As global battery demand reaches an estimated 4,700 GWh by 2030, manufacturers must address the operational inefficiencies caused by reactive service models.

To capture value in this growing market, organizations must transition from viewing aftermarket services as cost centers to treating them as a strategic imperative. The foundation for this transformation is a connected Service Lifecycle Management (SLM) system.

Strategies for BESS service excellence

Moving beyond reactive service requires a connected digital approach that links engineering data directly to the field. By establishing a single source of truth, manufacturers can ensure accurate data flow and proactive asset management.

  • The Shift Left approach:
Integrate service engineering into the product lifecycle early. By using simulation and digital twins, teams ensure a seamless connection between the Engineering Bill of Materials (EBOM) and the Service Bill of Materials (SBOM).
  • The as-maintained digital twin:
Maintain a unique, real-time record of each asset. This includes tracking warranty status, service history, and current configurations to enable proactive maintenance and precise parts identification.
  • Visual service documentation:
Mitigate knowledge loss from retiring technicians by providing AR-ready, interactive instructions. Using 3D models and exact specifications ensures that field teams have the right information to perform tasks accurately.

Success in the BESS market relies on a comprehensive digital twin and a connected lifecycle strategy. Manufacturers that establish these foundations will be better positioned to meet global demand and turn service into a competitive advantage.
